Saint Benedict Chaplet

About This Chaplet

Devotion to St. Benedict is a powerful way to protect yourself, your home and your loved ones. “In Benedictine prayer, we empty ourselves to make room for the contemplative love of God.” This chaplet consists of three sets of three beads each, with a Crucifix on one end, and the St. Benedict medal on the tail.

The face of the medal is of St. Benedict himself and on the back shows a bold striking cross with a Latin prayer in initials reading:
C S S M I – Crux sacra sit mihi lux! – “May the Holy Cross be my light!”
N D S M D – Numquam draco sit mihi dux! – “May the dragon never be my guide!”

Outside of the Cross are the letters C S P B – Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti – “The cross of [our] holy father Benedict”. Above the cross is the Latin word, PAX which means, “Peace”.

Around the margin are the initials for a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan saying:
V R S – Vade retro Satana! – “BeGone Satan!”
N S M V – Numquam suade mihi vana! – “Never tempt me with your vanities!”
S M Q L – Sunt mala quae libas. – “What you offer me is evil.”
I V B – Ipse venena bibas! – “Drink the poison yourself!”

Sign of the Cross

and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.

Novena to St. Benedict of Nursia

Glorious Saint Benedict,
sublime model of virtue,
pure vessel of God's grace!
Behold us humbling ourselves at your feet.
We implore you in your loving kindness
to pray for us before the throne of God.
To you we have recourse in the dangers
that daily surround us.
Shield us against our selfishness
and our indifference to God and to our neighbor.
Inspire us to imitate you in all things.
May your blessing be with us always,
so that we may see
and serve Christ in others
and work for His kingdom.

Graciously obtain for us from God
those favors and graces
which we need so much in the trials,
miseries and afflictions of life.
Your heart was always full of love,
compassion and mercy toward those
who were afflicted or troubled in any way.
You never dismissed without consolation and assistance
anyone who had recourse to you.
We therefore invoke your powerful intercession,
confident in the hope that you will hear our prayers
and obtain for us the special graces and favors we earnestly implore.

(State your intentions here...)

Help us, great Saint Benedict,
to live and die as faithful children of God,
to run in the sweetness of His loving will,
and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven.

Amen.

On the Crucifix:

While holding the Crucifix, recite the Apostle's Creed., and then the following prayer:

Holy St. Benedict, we honor you for your self-sacrifice
and solitary devotion to our Lord.
May your life of prayer and contemplation
inspire in all of us a similar respect
for holiness and deep spirituality.
We thank you for the Rule of St. Benedict
and the strength and example of your monastic commitment.
All things begin when we listen to the voice of God.
Amen.

On the Medal: Prayer of St. Benedict to Seek and Find God

Father, in Your goodness
grant us the intellect to comprehend You,
the perception to discern You,
and the reason to appreciate You.

In Your kindness
endow us with the diligence to look for You,
the wisdom to discover You,
and the spirit to apprehend You.

In Your graciousness
bestow on us a heart to contemplate You,
ears to hear You, eyes to see You,
and a tongue to speak of You.

In Your mercy
confer on us a conversation pleasing to You,
the patience to wait for You,
and the perseverance to long for You.

Grant us a perfect end,
in Your holy presence.
We ask this in the name of Your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.
