Prayers for the Faithful Departed

Novena for the Souls in Purgatory

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.

Act of Contrition

Most powerful and merciful Lord Jesus,
lover of souls,
most admirable in Your saints;
listen to the sighs and pleas
of the souls in Purgatory
who are desirous of Your mercy
and to the prayers of those
who are making this novena for them,
so that they may obtain Your mercy
and deign to rescue them
from that prison of their great suffering.
We beseech You to relieve first
those who are suffering there through our fault,
our close relatives, the abandoned,
and those who are about to be released from Purgatory.
We beseech You also,
to free above all,
those who injured us most
and deliver from their sins
those who are in the bondage of mortal sin
and bring them to a sincere repentance of their sins,
and become worthy of heaven.
Amen.

First Day

[In honor of the Blessed Virgin,
pray three ‘Hail Holy Queen’s,
and say the prayer for this day.]

Lord our God, receive our supplications,
prayers, mortifications and sighs
in suffrage for the blessed souls
for whom we make this novena;
and we pray that by that motherly love
bestowed on You by the Blessed Virgin,
grant that they may rise and be happy
in the realm of the living;
bestow upon us Your grace
by those sorrows endured
by Your most Holy Mother,
when she followed You on the way of Sorrow
up to Mount Calvary,
and grant what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Second Day

[In honor of the five Wounds of Jesus
and the great sorrows of Mary,
pray five ‘Our Father’s and five ‘Hail Mary’s,
and say the following prayer for this day.]

Most merciful Lord, we beseech You,
by that pain with which Your Holy Mother
saw You suffer and agonize
on the Sacred Tree of the Cross,
that the holy souls be freed
from those pains in Purgatory;
especially those souls for whom
we are praying in this novena,
applying the indulgences granted
by the Supreme Pontiffs for their relief
to all Religious, Fraternities and Congregations.
Bring those who are submerged in their sins
to a true knowledge of their guilt
and grant what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Third Day

[In honor of Saint Joseph,
pray three ‘Our Father’s, three ‘Hail Mary’s and three ‘Glory be’s,
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

Almighty God and Lord,
to whom nobody asks without hope of receiving,
by the intercession of that glorious patriarch Saint Joseph,
and by the patronage of Your beloved Mother,
particularly by that sorrow She experienced
when She saw You expire on the Cross,
enable the suffering souls in Purgatory
to be able to leave that place.
Deign to return to Your grace
those who are without it because of sin,
and grant us what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Fourth Day

[In honor of St. Joachim and St. Anne,
pray four ‘Our Father’s and four ‘Hail Mary’s and four ‘Glory be’s,
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

O Great God,
through Whose mercy the saints rest in glory,
we beg You to set free
those blessed souls for whom we are specially praying,
through the intercession of St. Joachim and St. Anne.
Hear us, Lord, by that bitter pain
of Your afflicted Mother when She heard
those outrageous blasphemies and offensive words
with which Your enemies were insulting Your Divine Innocence,
we beg You, Lord, to have mercy
on those who follow the path of perdition
by making them return to Your grace;
and please grant us what we ask in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Fifth Day

[In honor of St. Michael, the Archangel,
pray four ‘Our Father’s and four ‘Hail Mary’s,
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

Sovereign Lord,
in Whom it is proper to be merciful,
through the intercession of the Archangel St. Michael
and by the sorrows of Your Blessed Mother
suffered when that soldier
cruelly pierced Your side with a lance,
have pity on those souls for whom
we are offering this novena
and bring them to Your eternal rest.
Have mercy on those
who are in the state of mortal sin
and grant us what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Sixth Day

[In reverence of the glorious St. Lawrence,
special advocate of the souls
pray five ‘Our Father’s and five ‘Hail Mary’s and five ‘Glory be’s,
and then say the following prayer.]

Sweetest Jesus, incline Your ears
to our petitions for Your mercy
on the blessed souls in Purgatory,
especially on those for whom
we are making this novena,
through the torments suffered by the glorious St. Lawrence
in the fire of his martyrdom.
We are also begging Your mercy
for the blessed souls in Purgatory
by the pains suffered by Your loving Mother
when she saw You being taken down from the Cross
and when She received in Her Sacred Hands
the Crown and Nails bathed in Your Precious Blood.
Have mercy on those who are not in Your grace
by taking them out of that unhappy state
and grant us what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Seventh Day

[In honor of the nine choirs of Angels,
pray nine ‘Our Father’s and nine ‘Hail Mary’s,
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

Merciful Lord, through the intercession of the Angels,
especially of those who are the guardians
of those afflicted souls for whom
we make this novena;
and by the sorrow of Your Blessed Mother when,
after having kissed and adored Your Crown and Nails,
She received You in Her virginal and maternal arms
and gazed on Your mangled and lacerated Body,
we humbly beseech You to set them free
and bring them to the happiness of Heaven.
Lead those who are in mortal sin
to a true knowledge of their guilt
and grant us the grace we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Eighth Day

[In honor of the Seraphic Father St. Francis of Assissi
and St. Nicholas of Tolentino,
special patrons of the blessed souls,
pray five ‘Our Father’s and five ‘Hail Mary’s,
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

My sweet and beloved Jesus,
through the intercession of Your beloved seraphim, St. Francis of Assissi,
and of the glorious and charitable St. Nicholas of Tolentino,
we beg of You to shower
the immense treasures of Your clemency
on those blessed souls whose torments so touched
the charity of these two Servants of Yours.
But we beg this grace especially
through that bleeding Heart of Your Blessed Mother
when She wrapped and clothed Your Sacred Body for burial
and accompanied it to the Sepulchre.
Reduce those who are in sin
to a true repentance of them
and grant us what we ask in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Ninth Day

[In honor of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
pray five ‘Apostles Creed’s
and then say the following prayer for this day.]

Creator and Redeemer of all mankind,
through the infinite merits of Your Life,
Passion, and Death,
we beg of You to bestow on all souls,
particularly those for whom we are making this novena,
the pardon and indulgences they have always desired.
Through the intercession and merits of Your afflicted Mother,
especially by that sorrow of sorrows with which
She left You buried in the tomb and returned home
without the light of Her eyes
and the life of Her heart,
which is You, our Jesus,
have mercy on the blessed souls
so that they may enjoy You eternally in Heaven.
Turn Your eyes of mercy, too,
on those who are in the miserable state
of slavery to the devil,
so that they may be restored to Your grace,
and grant us what we ask of You in this novena
for Your greater honor and glory.
Amen.

[Here ask Christ Crucified what you desire to obtain in this novena.]

Concluding prayer…

Concluding Prayer

O Lord God,
Who left us the marks of Your Passion
on the Holy Sheet,
in which Your Sacred Body was wrapped
when it was taken down from the Cross by Joseph,
grant us, Lord,
that by Your death and burial,
we may be brought to the glory of the Resurrection,
where You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever.
Amen.

Decade of the Passion

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.

Divine Mercy Prayer

You expired, Jesus,
but the source of life gushed forth for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fount of Life,
unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world
and empty Yourself out upon us.

[Say the following three times.]

O Blood and Water,
which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus
as a fountain of Mercy for us,
I trust in You!

De Profundis (Psalm 130)

V. Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord;
R. Lord, hear my voice.
V. Let thine ears be attentive
R. to the voice of my supplication.
V. If thou, O Lord, shalt observe our iniquities ,
R. O Lord, who shall endure it?
V. For with thee there is merciful forgiveness;
R. and by reason of Thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord.
V. My soul hath relied on His word:
R. my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
V. From the morning watch even until night,
R. let Israel hope in the Lord.
V. Because with the Lord there is mercy,
R. and with Him plentiful redemption.
V. And he shall redeem Israel
R. from all his iniquities.

Or: “Our Father…” and “Hail Mary…”

For the souls of the faithful departed, we pray:
V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
R. and let perpetual light shine upon them.
V. May they rest in peace.
R. Amen.

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe
that you are one God in three divine Persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I believe that your divine Son became man
and died for our sins
and that he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe these and all the truths
which the Holy Catholic Church teaches
because you have revealed them
who are eternal truth and wisdom,
who can neither deceive nor be deceived.
In this faith I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Act of Hope

O Lord God, I hope by your grace
for the pardon of all my sins
and after life here to gain eternal happiness
because you have promised it
who are infinitely powerful, faithful,
kind, and merciful.
In this hope I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Act of Love

O Lord God, I love you above all things
and I love my neighbor for your sake
because you are the highest, infinite and perfect good,
worthy of all my love.
In this love I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Opening Prayer

Lord, open our lips and inflame our hearts
and cleanse them of useless and evil thoughts.
Enlighten our minds that we may seriously meditate
on Your suffering and death,
and the pains endured by Your most glorious mother;
and deign to hear and receive us before Your great majesty,
You who live and reign forever and ever.
Amen.

[Repeat the above for all the five decades of the Rosary.]

Offering

Most sweet Jesus,
who in Your desire to redeem the world,
deigned to be born, circumcised,
mocked by the Jews,
to fall into the hands of Your enemies
through the treacherous kiss of Judas,
to be bound and brought to the place of sacrifice
like a meek lamb,
brought before Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod,
spat on, accused
and condemned with false witnesses,
to be slapped and have Your sacred body
covered with wounds from the cruel scourging,
to be crowned with thorns,
Your face covered with a purple cloth in mockery,
stripped of Your garments,
nailed and elevated on the cross
between two thieves as if You were one of them,
offered gall and vinegar to drink,
and to be pierced in Your side with a lance,
deliver, O Lord, the souls in purgatory
from their great sufferings
through Your most bitter Passion;
bring them to Your glory
and deliver them from the pains of hell,
through the merits of Your Holy Passion
and Death on the Cross,
so that they may be worthy to enter that Kingdom
where You brought the good thief
who was crucified with You,
who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever.
Amen.

has commanded a particular respect
to parents, kindred & benefactors;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

we humbly beseech You

Novena Prayers for the Departed and Their Loved Ones

Lord, help us see death for what it really is,
The end of poverty and the beginning of riches;
The end of frustration and the beginning of fulfilment;
The end of fear and the beginning of tranquillity;
The end of pain and the beginning of joy;
The end of weakness and the beginning of strength.

Let not grief overwhelm us,
or a sense of loss embitter us.
But out of our sadness,
let there arise a new joy
for so much is given to us.
Cast out our fears
and let not our hearts be troubled.
Let Your spirit of peace come alive
Within our experience & hurt,
our sorrow & isolation,
Our sadness today
and loneliness tomorrow.

We humbly commend to you [name of the deceased],
whom You have called out of this mortal life.
You loved always with great love.
Now that You have freed him/her/them
from all evils of this earth,
bring him/her/them into Your paradise
where there is no more grief
nor mourning nor sadness
but peace and joy with Your Son
and the Holy Spirit forever.

We thank You for all the blessings
You have given in his/her/their mortal life.
We pray that we may be able to glorify You
with the life that he/she/they lived
and the way he/she/they made use of his/her/their blessings.

Lord God, grant that we will never forget
that life is short and uncertain.
Let Your spirit guide us in holiness,
justice and service to our brothers and sisters.
We pray for the healing of all unhappy feelings,
[name of the deceased]'s death has left in our hearts.
Be with us, Lord, during our moments of sorrow & loneliness.
You are our rock, our fortress, and our strength.
We trust in You and hope in Your glorious Resurrection.
We lift up to You our grief and sorrow
Confident that You will change our mourning to rejoicing
That our beloved [name of or relation to the deceased] now rests in your peace.

V. Eternal rest grant unto [name of the deceased] , O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon him/her/them.
V. May he/she/they rest in peace.
R. Amen.
V. May the soul of [name of the deceased] and the souls of all the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace.
R. Amen.

Final Prayers

Lord Jesus, our Redeemer,
You willingly gave Yourself up to death
so that all people might be saved
and pass from death into a new life.
Listen to our prayers;
look with love on Your people
who mourn and pray for their beloved dead.
Lord Jesus,
You alone are holy and compassionate;
forgive our departed loved ones their sins.

By dying You opened the gates of life
for those who believe in You;
do not let Your brother(s)/sister(s) be parted from You,
but by Your glorious power
give him/her/them light, joy, and peace in heaven
where You live for ever and ever.
Amen.

V. Eternal rest grant unto [name of the deceased], O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon him/her/them.
V. May he/she rest in peace.
R. Amen,
V. From the gates of hell,
R. Deliver his/ her soul, O Lord,
V. O Lord, hear our prayer.
R. And let our cry come unto You.
V. The Lord be with him/her/them.
R. And with his/her/their Spirit.
