Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most holy Heart of Jesus,
fountain of every blessing,
I adore You,
I love You
and with a lively sorrow for my sins,
I offer You this poor heart of mine.
Make me humble, patient,
pure and wholly obedient to Your will.
Grant, good Jesus,
that I may live in You and for You.
Protect me in the midst of danger;
comfort me in my afflictions;
give me health of body,
assistance in my temporal needs,
Your blessing on all that I do,
and the grace of a holy death.
Within Your Heart I place my every care.
In every need let me come to You
with humble trust saying,
‘Heart of Jesus help me.’

and deliver the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

The Memorare of St. Bernard

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known,
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help
or sought thine intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee I come,
before thee I humbly present myself,
sinful and sorrowful.

[Mention here your request.]

O mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petition,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

The Most Holy Rosary

Sign of the Cross

In the Name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Opening Prayers

Apostle’s Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell; the third day, He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father Almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

For an increase in the virtues of faith, hope and charity, we pray:

An Act of Faith (optional)

O my God, I firmly believe
that You are one God in three Divine Persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
I believe that Your Divine Son became man and died for our sins,
and that He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches,
because You revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived.

Hail Mary…

An Act of Hope (optional)

O my God, relying on Your infinite goodness and promises,
I hope to obtain pardon of my sins,
the help of Your grace, and life everlasting,
through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.

Hail Mary…

An Act of Charity (optional)

O my God, I love You above all things,
with my whole heart and soul,
because You are all-good and worthy of all love.
I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You.
I forgive all who have injured me,
and I ask pardon of all whom I have injured.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God,
Have mercy on me, a sinner.

Hail Mary…

Glory Be:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

Optional Prayers After Each Decade

Prayer of Fatima

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
and lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

Prayer for Eternal Rest

In November and Rosaries for the Dead: The ‘Eternal Rest’ prayer is often prayed in place of the Fatima Prayer during the month of November (especially after dusk on All Saints Day and on All Souls Day) and during Rosaries prayed for the dead, such as at Funeral Vigils. Start by dedicating the prayer.

For our departed loved ones (or state a name), especially for the holy souls in Purgatory, we pray:
Eternal rest grant unto him/her (them), O Lord;
and let perpetual light shine upon him/her (them).
May he/she (they) rest in peace.
Amen.

Prayer of the Miraculous Medal:

O Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to you,
and for all who do not have recourse to you,
especially for the enemies of the Holy Church,
and for those recommended to you.
Amen.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

The First Sorrowful Mystery – The Agony in the Garden

My child, when you come to serve the Lord,
prepare yourself for testing.
Set your heart right and be steadfast,
and do not be impetuous in time of calamity.
Accept whatever befalls you,
and in times of humiliation, be patient.
For gold is tested in the fire,
and those found acceptable,
in the furnace of humiliation.
(Sir 2:1-2,4-5 – NRSV)

Our Father…

  1. They went to a place called Gethsemane;
    and [Jesus] said to his disciples,
    “Sit here while I pray.”
    He took with him Peter and James and John,
    and began to be distressed and agitated.
    And he said to them,
    “I am deeply grieved, even to death;
    remain here, and keep awake.”

    Hail Mary… (Mk 14:32-34 – NRSV)

  2. Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw,
    knelt down, and prayed,
    “Father, if you are willing,
    remove this cup from me;
    yet, not my will but yours be done.”

    Hail Mary… (Lk 22:41-42 – NRSV)

  3. Then an angel from heaven appeared to him
    and gave him strength.
    In his anguish he prayed more earnestly,
    and his sweat became like great drops of blood
    falling down on the ground.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 22:43-44 – NRSV)

  4. Then he came to the disciples
    and found them sleeping;
    and he said to Peter,
    “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?
    Stay awake and pray
    that you may not come into temptation;
    the spirit indeed is willing,
    but the flesh is weak.”

    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:40-41 – NRSV)

  5. Again he went away for the second time and prayed,
    “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it,
    your will be done.”

    Again he came and found them sleeping,
    for their eyes were heavy.
    So leaving them again, he went away
    and prayed for the third time,
    saying the same words.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:42-44 – NRSV)

  6. Then he came to the disciples and said to them,
    “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?
    See, the hour is at hand,
    and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

    While he was still speaking,
    Judas, one of the twelve, arrived;
    with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs,
    from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:45,47 – NRSV)

  7. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,
    “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him.”
    At once he came up to Jesus and said,
    “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
    Jesus said to him,
    “Friend, do what you are here to do.”
    Then they came and laid hands on Jesus
    and arrested him.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:48-50 – NRSV)

  8. When those who were around him saw what was coming,
    they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”
    Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest
    and cut off his right ear.
    But Jesus said, “No more of this!”
    And he touched his ear and healed him.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 22:49-51 – NRSV)

  9. At that hour Jesus said to the crowds,
    “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me
    as though I were a bandit?
    Day after day I sat in the temple teaching,
    and you did not arrest me.
    But all this has taken place,
    so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.”

    Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:55-56 – NRSV)

  10. It is not enemies who taunt me —
    I could bear that;
    it is not adversaries who deal insolently with me —
    I could hide from them.
    But it is you, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend,
    with whom I kept pleasant company;
    we walked in the house of God with the throng.
    Hail Mary… (Ps 55:12-14 – NRSV)

Glory be…
O my Jesus…
or: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
O Mary, conceived without sin…

The Second Sorrowful Mystery – The Scourging At The Pillar

But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain.
When you make his life an offering for sin,
through him the will of the Lord shall prosper.
(Is 53:5,10* – NRSV)

Our Father…

  1. When morning came,
    all the chief priests and the elders of the people
    conferred together against Jesus
    in order to bring about his death.
    They bound him, led him away,
    and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:1-2 – NRSV)

  2. They began to accuse him, saying,
    “We found this man perverting our nation,
    forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor,
    and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:2 – NRSV)

  3. Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
    Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world.
    If my kingdom were from this world,
    my followers would be fighting
    to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
    But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

    Hail Mary… (Mk 15:2a, Jn 18:36 – NRSV)

  4. Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?”
    Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.
    For this I was born,
    and for this I came into the world,
    to testify to the truth.
    Everyone who belongs to the truth
    listens to my voice.”

    Hail Mary… (Jn 18:37-38 – NRSV)

  5. But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,
    he did not answer.
    Then Pilate said to him,
    “Do you not hear how many accusations they make against you?”
    But he gave him no answer,
    not even to a single charge,
    so that the governor was greatly amazed.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:12-14 – NRSV)

  6. Though harshly treated, he submitted
    and did not open his mouth;
    like a lamb led to slaughter
    or a sheep silent before shearers,
    he did not open his mouth.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:7 – NABR)

  7. Pilate then called together the chief priests,
    the leaders, and the people, and said to them,
    “You brought me this man as one
    who was perverting the people;
    and here I have examined him in your presence
    and have not found this man guilty
    of any of your charges against him.
    I will therefore have him flogged and release him.”
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:13-14,16 – NRSV)

  8. But all together they shouted out,
    “Away with this man!
    Release Barabbas to us.
    (Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion
    that had taken place in the city
    and for murder.)
    Again Pilate addressed them,
    still wishing to release Jesus,
    but they continued their shouting,
    “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:18-21 – NABR)

  9. A third time [Pilate] said to them,
    “Why, what evil has he done?
    I have found in him
    no ground for the sentence of death;
    I will therefore have him flogged
    and then release him.”
    But they kept urgently demanding
    with loud shouts
    that he should be crucified;
    and their voices prevailed.
    Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:22-23 – NRSV; Jn 19:1 – RSV)

  10. He had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
    He was despised and rejected by others;
    a man of sorrows,
    and acquainted with infirmity;
    and as one from whom others hide their faces
    he was despised,
    and we held him of no account.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:2b-3 – NRSV)

Glory be…
O my Jesus…
or: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
O Mary, conceived without sin…

The Third Sorrowful Mystery – The Crowning with Thorns

[The Lord] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,
for power is made perfect in weakness.”
So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses,
so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
Therefore I am content with weaknesses,
insults, hardships, persecutions,
and calamities for the sake of Christ;
for whenever I am weak,
then I am strong.
(2 Cor 12:9-10 – NRSV)

Our Father…

  1. Then the soldiers of the governor
    took Jesus into the praetorium;
    and they gathered the whole cohort around him.
    They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
    and after twisting some thorns into a crown,
    they put it on his head.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:27-29a – NRSV)

  2. They put a reed in his right hand
    and knelt before him and mocked him, saying,
    “Hail, King of the Jews!”
    They spat on him,
    and took the reed and struck him on the head.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:29b-30 – NRSV)

  3. I gave my back to those who beat me,
    my cheeks to those who tore out my beard;
    my face I did not hide
    from insults and spitting.
    The Lord God is my help,
    therefore I am not disgraced.
    Hail Mary… (Is 50:6-7a – NABR)

  4. So Jesus came out,
    wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak.
    When the chief priests and the guards saw him
    they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!”
    Pilate said to them,
    “Take him yourselves and crucify him.
    I find no guilt in him.
    The Jews answered, “We have a law,
    and according to that law he ought to die,
    because he made himself the Son of God.”
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:5a,6-7 – NABR)

  5. Now when Pilate heard this,
    he was more afraid than ever.
    He asked Jesus, “Where are you from?”
    But Jesus gave him no answer.
    Pilate therefore said to him,
    “Do you not know that I have power to release you,
    and power to crucify you?”
    Jesus answered him,
    “You would have no power over me
    unless it had been given you from above;
    therefore the one who handed me over to you
    is guilty of a greater sin.”

    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:8-11 – NRSV)

  6. Consequently, Pilate tried to release him;
    but the Jews cried out,
    “If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar.
    Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”
    When Pilate heard these words
    he brought Jesus out
    and seated him on the judge’s bench
    in the place called Stone Pavement,
    in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:12-13 – NABR)

  7. [Pilate] said to the Jews,
    “Here is your King!”
    They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!”
    Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
    The chief priests answered,
    “We have no king but the emperor.”
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:14-15 – NRSV)

  8. So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing,
    but rather that a riot was beginning,
    he took some water
    and washed his hands before the crowd, saying,
    “I am innocent of this man’s blood;
    see to it yourselves.”
    Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
    Hail Mary… (Mt 26:24, Jn 19:16a – NRSV)

  9. Seized and condemned, he was taken away.
    Who would have thought any more of his destiny?
    For he was cut off from the land of the living,
    struck for the sins of his people.
    He was given a grave among the wicked,
    a burial place with evildoers,
    though he had done no wrong,
    nor was deceit found in his mouth.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:8-9 – NABR)

  10. [The ungodly] reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,
    “Let us lie in wait for the righteous man,
    because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions.
    He professes to have knowledge of God,
    and calls himself a child of the Lord.
    Let us test him with insult and torture,
    so that we may find out how gentle he is,
    and make trial of his forbearance.
    Let us condemn him to a shameful death,
    for, according to what he says, he will be protected.”
    Hail Mary… (Wis 1:16*, 2:1*,12a,13,19-20 – NRSV)

Glory be…
O my Jesus…
or: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
O Mary, conceived without sin…

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery – The Carrying of the Cross

Let us rejoice in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance,
and endurance produces character,
and character produces hope,
and hope does not disappoint us,
because God’s love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
(Rom 5:3*-5 – RSV)

Our Father…

  1. So [the Jews] took Jesus;
    and carrying the cross by himself,
    he went out to what is called
    The Place of the Skull,
    which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:16b-17 – NRSV)

  2. As they led him away,
    they seized a man,
    Simon of Cyrene,
    who was coming from the country,
    and they laid the cross on him,
    and made him carry it behind Jesus.
    Two others also, who were criminals,
    were led away to be put to death with him.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:26,32 – NRSV)

  3. “If any want to become my followers,
    let them deny themselves
    and take up their cross daily and follow me.
    For those who want to save their life will lose it,
    and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.
    What does it profit them if they gain the whole world,
    but lose or forfeit themselves?
    Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me
    cannot be my disciple.”

    Hail Mary… (Lk 9:23-25,14:27 – NRSV)

  4. “Come to me, all you that are weary
    and are carrying heavy burdens,
    and I will give you rest.
    Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;
    for I am gentle and humble in heart,
    and you will find rest for your souls.
    For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

    Hail Mary… (Mt 11:28-30 – NRSV)

  5. A great number of the people followed [Jesus],
    and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.
    But Jesus turned to them and said,
    “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me,
    but weep for yourselves and for your children.
    For if they do this when the wood is green,
    what will happen when it is dry?”

    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:27-29, 31 – NRSV)

  6. Yet it was our pain that he bore,
    our sufferings he endured.
    We thought of him as stricken,
    struck down by God and afflicted.
    We had all gone astray like sheep,
    all following our own way;
    But the Lord laid upon him
    the guilt of us all.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:4,6 – NABR)

  7. Because of his anguish
    he shall see the light;
    because of his knowledge
    he shall be content;
    My servant, the just one,
    shall justify the many,
    their iniquity he shall bear.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:11 – NABR)

  8. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great,
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
    because he poured out himself to death,
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
    yet he bore the sin of many,
    and made intercession for the transgressors.
    Hail Mary… (Is 53:12 – NRSV)

  9. When he was abused,
    he did not return abuse;
    when he suffered,
    he did not threaten;
    but he entrusted himself
    to the one who judges justly.
    He himself bore our sins
    in his body on the cross,
    so that, free from sins,
    we might live for righteousness;
    by his wounds you have been healed.
    Hail Mary… (1 Pet 2:23-24 – NRSV)

  10. Therefore, let us rid ourselves
    of every burden and sin that clings to us
    and persevere in running the race
    that lies before us
    while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus,
    the leader and perfecter of faith.
    For the sake of the joy that lay before him
    he endured the cross,
    despising its shame.
    Hail Mary… (Heb 12:1-2* – NABR)

Glory be…
O my Jesus…
or: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
O Mary, conceived without sin…

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery – The Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
(Phl 2:6*-8 – NRSV)

Our Father…

  1. When they came to the place that is called The Skull
    they crucified Jesus there with the criminals,
    one on his right and one on his left.
    Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them;
    for they do not know what they are doing.”

    And they cast lots to divide his clothing.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:33-34 – NRSV)

  2. Those who passed by derided him,
    shaking their heads and saying,
    “You who would destroy the temple
    and build it in three days, save yourself!
    He saved others; let him save himself
    If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:39-40 – NRSV)

  3. In the same way the chief priests also,
    along with the scribes and elders,
    were mocking him, saying,
    “He saved others; he cannot save himself.
    He is the King of Israel;
    let him come down from the cross now,
    and we will believe in him.
    He trusts in God;
    let God deliver him now,
    if he wants to;
    for he said, ‘I am God’s Son.’”
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:41-43 – NRSV)

  4. One of the criminals who were hanged there
    kept deriding him and saying,
    “Are you not the Messiah?
    Save yourself and us!”
    But the other rebuked him, saying,
    “Do you not fear God,
    since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
    And we indeed have been condemned justly,
    but this man has done nothing wrong.”
    Then he said, “Jesus, remember me
    when you come into your kingdom.”
    He replied, “Truly I tell you,
    today you will be with me in Paradise.”

    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:39-41*,42-43 – NRSV)

  5. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus
    were his mother, and his mother’s sister,
    Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
    When Jesus saw his mother
    and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her,
    he said to his mother,
    “Woman, here is your son.”
    Then he said to the disciple,
    “Here is your mother.”
    And from that hour
    the disciple took her into his own home.
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:25b-27 – NRSV)

  6. From noon on, darkness came over the whole land
    until three in the afternoon.
    And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice,
    “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:45-46 – NRSV)

  7. After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished,
    he said, “I am thirsty.”
    A jar full of sour wine was standing there.
    So they put a sponge full of the wine
    on a branch of hyssop
    and held it to his mouth.
    When Jesus had received the wine, he said,
    “It is finished.”
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:28-30a – NRSV)

  8. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said,
    “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
    Having said this, he breathed his last.
    And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle
    saw what had taken place,
    they returned home, beating their breasts.
    But all his acquaintances,
    including the women who had followed him from Galilee,
    stood at a distance, watching these things.
    Hail Mary… (Lk 23:46,48-49 – NRSV)

  9. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs
    of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.
    But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
    they did not break his legs.
    Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,
    and at once blood and water came out.
    These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled,
    “None of his bones shall be broken.”
    And again, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”
    Hail Mary… (Jn 19:32-34,36-37 – NRSV)

  10. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two,
    from top to bottom;
    and the earth shook, and the rocks were split;
    When the centurion and those who were with him,
    keeping watch over Jesus,
    saw the earthquake and what took place,
    they were filled with awe, and said,
    “Truly this was the Son of God!”
    Hail Mary… (Mt 27:51,54 – RSV)

Glory be…
O my Jesus…
or: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
O Mary, conceived without sin…

Closing Reflection on the Role of the Blessed Mother in Our Salvation (Optional)

She conceived, brought forth and nourished Christ.
She presented Him to the Father in the temple,
and was united with Him by compassion
as He died on the Cross.
In this singular way she cooperated
by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity
in the work of the Saviour
in giving back supernatural life to souls.
Wherefore she is our mother in the order of grace.
This maternity of Mary in the order of grace
began with the consent which she gave in faith at the Annunciation
and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross,
and lasts until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect.
Taken up to heaven,
she did not lay aside this salvific duty,
but by her constant intercession
continued to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation.
(Vat. II, Lumen gentium: Constit. of Ch. 61, 62)
